About MaryChong's%20pic%20of%20Mary.JPG
In 2001 Mary noticed an advertisement in a fitness magazine offering a chance to enrol in a level one floor Pilates course in Sydney. Believing it would be a useful and relevant extension to her current fitness qualifications and experience, Mary went on to develop a passion by embarking on an amazing and challenging journey of discovering first hand the basics, the benefits and the beauty of the Pilates Method!

Absolutely delighted with the opportunity to both teach and practice Pilates as a way of life, Mary has moved away from gym based work and now her focus is on improving her own technique, upgrading her qualifications at every opportunity, as well as promoting the safe teaching of mat and reformer classes to as wide an audience as possible. Mary has now completed a number of Pilates courses and has qualifications in matwork and reformer with the Pilates Institute of Australasia in Sydney, as well with Helen Tardent from Pilates Moves in Double Bay, Sydney. Wishing to develop a more thorough knowledge of the wider clinical repertoire and teaching techniques available on all the Pilates apparatus in a studio setting, Mary has now enrolled in Certificate IV with the Pilates International Training College. This involves considerable expense, frequent trips to Sydney for training and many, many hours of study and practice!

Mary's other life.
Mary is a sixth generation Tasmanian who lives in Hobart, is married to a Psychiatrist and is the mother and slave of three adult children!

She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, a Diploma of Education and a Diploma of Music with majors in Piano and Voice.

Outside of the inevitable home duties attached to marriage and mothering, Mary’s professional life includes over 15 years of English, German and Music teaching, working as a legal practice librarian, being a personal assistant to a federal politician, a medical practice manager and even an augmenting player with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra on bassoon!

Special interests include high altitude trekking in remote places, singing with the Tasmanian Symphony Chorus, bushwalking with family and friends, playing Real Tennis (rather badly) and, when time permits, playing bridge!

Mary is a regular fitness presenter on ABC radio and has also been a motivational speaker for several years - presenting at conferences throughout Tasmania, as well as interstate and overseas on a range of topics such as lifestyle, stress management, travel and achievable fitness for ordinary people. Using slides and anecdotes of personal experiences gained whilst walking in the most remote and primitive areas of the world, Mary entertains audiences of all ages with personal, at times intimate, and always colourful tales of her adventures. She shows how problem solving, team building and confronting physical and emotional obstacles can be met feet first with humour and mental and physical stamina.

More recently Mary has been actively involved in the fitness industry – working with the Vietnam Veterans’ Heart Health program and as a personal trainer for an executive gym.

The future.
To pass Certificate IV, to take her studies to Diploma level, to teach as many classes as possible to all and sundry with both Gin and Christie alongside and to enjoy all the benefits the practice of Pilates offers on a physical and mental level for many years to come.
